Additional Family Tree Elements

Once you’ve chosen your custom family tree design, there are a few optional elements you can include to personalize it even further. These details help your artwork feel more complete and meaningful—whether it’s being gifted, displayed, or passed down.

Name Detail

You can choose how much detail you’d like to include for each family member. Some people prefer a clean, minimal approach, while others want to add historical context. There’s no right or wrong—just what feels right for your tree.

Options include:

  • Names only

  • Names with birth and death years

  • Names with birth/death years and birthplace information

These choices are entirely up to you and can be tailored to fit the design you’ve selected.

Tree Title

Many people choose to include a title at the top or bottom of their family tree. This could be a simple surname or something more descriptive, depending on the purpose of the tree.

Some common title options include:

  • The [Surname] Family

  • [Surname] Lines

  • [Surname]-[Surname] Tree (for blended or shared families)

  • A couple’s names with wedding date

  • A child’s name with birth year or full birthdate

  • “Our Family” or “Generations of [Surname]”

Titles can help ground the piece and add a personal or sentimental touch.

Photo / Family Crest

If you’d like to include an old family photo or your family’s crest, that can often be added beneath the tree—especially in ring-style layouts. This option works best with the 16×20 size, which has more vertical space to accommodate additional elements. The square (16×16) version typically doesn’t allow enough room.

Including a photo or crest is a great way to visually anchor your family tree and bring in a piece of your history. If you're not sure what will work best with your chosen design, we’ll talk it through during your consultation.
